Nokia

I’ve been a big fan of Nokia for years.
My first cell phone, in 2000, was a Nokia 6100. I used that phone til death did us part. Or close enough. I changed every piece on that phone except for the main board. It was an all-star. It had text messaging, infrared printing, good sized keys, a calendar, a calculator, a multitude of ringtones, and was extendable. In fact, I got the extensions…I had a analog attachment, an extended battery, hands-free, hmm…what else, I’m sure I had other things. I had a whole bag of toys for it when I was done.
Anyways, I’ve been looking at Nokia’s for years. I prefer their interfaces, their functionality, and their reception. But their phones are very hard to get anymore. They make a whole line of phones, the “N-Series” which are amazing. They have a camera phone (3.2mp), a music phone (4/8GB), a video phone (video camera), and a range of combinations. But they are targetted at Europe. And no US vendor sells them straightforwardly, minus Nokia. Nokia charges between 3 and 800 for these handsets. This isn’t too out of the ordinary, but its still irritating. Why can’t the US have decent phones!?!??! There is an interesting article I read today which was an interview of the CEO of AT&T Mobility, who discussed this problem. Unfortunately, the focus of the article was on the iPhone.
Today however though, I found the Nokia N810. I’ve seen the Nokia N700, and the N800, for sale. I’ve looked at the devices, but wondered why you would carry one. However, today’s version, the N810, seems pretty useful. It’s a handheld computer, without a cell phone antenna, which does everything. It has a full QWERTY keyboard, it has 802.11, bluetooth, USB2.0, 2GB internal memory, a 400Mhz processor, and is a little linux computer! It would appear that you can also use it to do VOIP calling, though I haven’t researched enough.
I’m looking into it. It seems to be a really cool device. It’s just missing one thing, GSM functionality.

I agree wholeheartededly with your love for Nokias and how farking frustrating it is to not be able to have access to the cool ones in the US. Is the new phone that you got CDMA (Verizon) compatible as well, or just GSM? Let me know how you like the N95.
